DevNotify vs Octobox: two very different ways to tame GitHub notifications

Octobox is a free, open-source "inbox for your GitHub notifications" — originally a web app you could self-host or use hosted, now primarily a self-hosted project. DevNotify is a paid native macOS menu bar app. They approach the same problem from opposite directions, so the right choice depends less on features and more on how you work.

The short version

Where Octobox wins

• Free and open source. No license fee, ever, and code anyone can audit.
• Works anywhere. Any browser, any OS, including your phone — a menu bar app can't follow you to an iPad.
• Inbox workflow. Archiving, filtering and bulk actions across notifications is its core strength, built over years.

Where DevNotify wins

• Zero setup, zero maintenance. There is no server to deploy, patch, or pay for. If maintaining a Docker instance sounds like work rather than fun, this matters more than any feature list.
• Ambient awareness. An unread count sitting in your menu bar means you notice things when they happen — not when you happen to remember to open a tab.
• Strictly local. Your token never leaves your Mac. Nothing is stored on any third-party server, yours or ours — there is simply no backend.

When to choose which

Choose Octobox if: you enjoy self-hosting, need notification triage from multiple devices including phones, or want free open-source tooling on principle. It's a mature project that solves a real problem well.

Choose DevNotify if: you're on a Mac all day and want notifications visible at a glance without deploying anything — install, paste a token, and it works.
