GitHub notifications on Apple Watch
There's no official GitHub app for Apple Watch, and GitHub has never shipped watchOS support. But you can absolutely get GitHub notifications on your wrist today — the question is which way gives you signal instead of noise. Here's what actually works in 2026.
Option 1: Mirror iPhone notifications
The built-in route: GitHub's iOS app (or GitHub email) delivers notifications to your iPhone, and watchOS mirrors them to the Watch. Setup:
- Install the GitHub mobile app and sign in.
- On the Watch app on your phone: Notifications → Mirror iPhone alerts from → GitHub (or Mail, if you use email notifications).
- Tune Custom vs mirror-all so only apps you choose buzz your wrist.
The catch: you inherit whatever noise level your phone has. A busy repo means constant buzzing, and a wrist notification is worse than a screen one — you can't skim it away, it taps you physically. Most people who try this end up muting GitHub entirely within a week, and then they miss the review request that actually mattered.
Option 2: Filter first via email rules + VIP
A quieter version of the same idea: don't mirror the GitHub app, mirror Mail, but only let through what matters. Set up rules so that only notifications containing "requested your review", "mentioned you", or specific repositories reach your inbox (or a dedicated folder that counts as unread), then add that sender or folder pattern to your VIP list. The Watch buzzes once — for the PR that needs you, not the 40 dependabot updates.
The catch: Gmail's filters don't reliably trigger iOS VIP alerts, so this usually requires Apple Mail with server-side rules, and the setup is fiddly. It also runs minutes behind at best.
Option 3: Keep the wrist quiet, keep the desk loud (recommended)
Honest framing: the reason people want GitHub on their Watch is anxiety about missing a review request while heads-down. But the moment you're actually working, you're sitting in front of a computer — where a better channel already exists.
A menu bar app like DevNotify shows your unread GitHub count right next to the clock all day, filtered down to your notifications: review requests, @mentions, CI failures on your branches. You glance instead of being tapped. Your Watch stays silent except for real people and calendar alerts, and nothing important slips because the important stuff was visible at your desk the whole time.
This combination — quiet wrist, glanceable menu bar — is what most developers converge on after trying full mirroring. It also avoids routing your tokens or notification contents through any third-party watch service.
DevNotify puts your unread count in the macOS menu bar and opens the exact PR or issue in one click. Free 7-day trial, $19 lifetime.
